Review
Here is a truly marvelous antique Oushak carpet that was woven in Turkey around the turn of the twentieth century. Generally speaking, antique Oushak rugs and carpets are among the most admired of all antique Oriental rugs, and are prized for their unique aesthetic qualities. Often, Oushak carpets will feature traditional compositions presented in a subdued, monochromatic pallet. This particular carpet exemplifies these aesthetic tendencies, and showcases the finest developments in Oushak carpet weaving. The subtle border consists of inner and outer bands that surround a delicate vine scroll detail, the leaves of which are just visible against the pale color the entire rug expresses. In the field, Two medallions unfold, although once again subtly, as all of the detail work is rendered in tones that contrast minimally with the pale gold of the background. A genuinely impressive antique Oushak carpet, this magnificent composition is a stunning example of an enduringly popular style.
