Beautiful Rust Antique Tribal Caucasian Kazak Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Caucasian Rug, Circa Date: 1880 – This vibrant and unique antique Caucasian rug was woven by tribes people of Kazak in the south central part of the Caucasus (the area stretching from Tiflis in Georgia to Erivan in Armenia) . This general area has been a hotbed of tribal and nomadic rug weaving for decades and has produced some of the most sought after and collectible rugs. Each one of the antique Kazak rugs is unique and each will incorporate distinctive design elements from the Kazak culture.
This beautiful antique tribal Caucasian Kazak rug is filled with primitive designs and protective symbols. The Gol designs, an octagonal medallion sometimes in the shape of a flower, are scattered throughout the antique carpet, but especially focused in the central block.
Other patterns such as Ram’s horns, camel and a geometric person are featured here. While these patterns could be the weavers attempt at offering us a glimpse into their daily life, they may have deeper and more hidden meanings. For example, the woven person could also mean that the weaver was pregnant at the time she was making this antique rug. By weaving a geometric female figure, the weaver may have been trying to influence the sex of her baby.
Another great example is the camel design motif. Camels were especially important to those in the Middle East and it was considered a blessing to put one into a textile. Camels could represent strength and endurance for their ability to withstand the sweltering heat of the desert for long periods of time or they could also represent fertility by the way they store water and nourish themselves.
While antique Oriental rugs, such as this antique tribal Caucasian Kazak rug, are sought after by collectors for their uniqueness and tribal folk art appeal, they also make great decorative additions. These small pieces are sure to brighten up any home’s interior design.
